Students Learn Water 101 Thanks to a Partnership Between the Majestic Realty Foundation and Metropolitan Water District
At a recent meeting of the Los Angeles Youth Leadership Council (LAYLC) students received a lesson in water 101 thanks to a partnership between the Majestic Realty Foundation and the Metropolitan Water District (MWD).
During the event students heard from top MWD officials who covered a variety of topics, not only on the water delivery system in Southern California, but also on the variety of careers with-in the field of water distribution/management.

The Los Angeles Youth Leadership Council is an informal coalition of six urban youth centers. As the flagship program of the Majestic Realty Foundation, the LAYLC provides leadership training, community service and college preparatory activities to enable young people to be active and engaged members of society.
“One of our goals with the LAYLC is to expose students to a wide variety of opportunities and careers so that they may discover their passion and pursue their goals,” said Fran Inman, president, Majestic Realty Foundation. “The team at MWD not only offered the students a wonderful example of the diversity of opportunities available, but also demonstrated how fulfilling a career in public service can be.”
Following the building tour, which included a visit through the MWD Museum and a special trip to see the view of downtown from the executive offices on the twelfth floor, the evening culminated with a special presentation in the boardroom. Students choose board member seats on the dais and watched the final presentation from individual monitors and asked questions from their special posts.
“These students are our future leaders, said Gilbert Ivey, chief administrative officer, Metropolitan Water District. “It is important to educate students about the work of MWD and the necessity of water to our state’s economic and social wellbeing, but we also want them to know that organizations like MWD are committed to recruiting a diverse workforce."

At the end of the evening, students left tasked with performing a water conservation audit of their individual youth centers. Each group was charged with completing the analysis and coming back to the August LAYLC meeting with the results and their suggestions for ways their member youth centers could improve their water and energy use.
Founded and sponsored by the Majestic Realty Foundation, the LAYLC brings together 80 students annually from six urban youth centers in Los Angeles. The Majestic Realty Foundation strongly believes that youth centers have the power to curb youth violence, develop strong leaders and create safe communities.
The LAYLC offers its young members the chance to take part in college tours and visits from high-profile guest speakers, such as public officials, business leaders and other decision makers. In turn, students receive leadership training, including pointers on public speaking, economic literacy and civic affairs. The students are then encouraged to become active in their communities.
Established in 2002, the Majestic Foundation provides grants and other support to various charitable community partners that work the areas of youth, family, education, health and violence prevention in the communities where Majestic Realty Co., one of the nation's leading private commercial real estate developers, does business.
